Increasing Health Club Membership

The surge in health club memberships over the last few years has been credited to the consumer¹s increased awareness of the benefits of exercise in controlling weight, preventing illnesses and increasing overall well-being. Memberships in the U.S. have grown to 29.9 million in 1999, an increase of 12 percent for a consecutive record of five years.

Health clubs are working hard to provide members with quality programs, classes, equipment, facilities, staff and customer service to retain current members and attract new business.

Mileage Program Helps Promote Regular Exercise

Health promotion programs can be a fun, goal-oriented way to encourage your members to stick with their exercise programs. With this in mind, the American Medical Athletic Association (AMAA) created Exercise Across America!, a program that helps exercisers track their running, walking, biking or swimming miles. The goal is to “travel” across the U.S., one state at a time.

Susan Kalish, executive director of AMAA, explains that 50 percent of people who start an exercise program stop within six months. This program is designed to help people have fun and be successful when setting and achieving their fitness goals.
